The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (CWF) operates the world’s largest living history museum in Williamsburg, Virginia—the restored 18th-century capital of Britain’s largest, wealthiest, and most populous outpost of empire in the New World. In Colonial Williamsburg’s 301-acre Historic Area stand hundreds of restored, reconstructed, and historically furnished buildings. Costumed interpreters tell the stories of the men and women of the 18th-century city—black, white, and native American, slave, indentured, and free—and the challenges they faced. In this historic place, the Foundation helps the future learn from the past.

CWF was faced with maintaining an e-commerce platform limited in functionality and scalability.  To address these and many other concerns CWF researched and selected WebSphere Commerce as their market leading proven e-commerce solution.

The success of the Colonial Williamsburg foundation has been its efforts to make itself as accessible as possible to its customers through their online www.WilliamsburgMarketPlace.com site, its retail stores, a call center and direct mail catalog sales.  The WebSphere Commerce application provided the foundation to enable a tight integration with Commercial Ware’s CWDirect Retail Transaction system and their www.WilliamsburgMarketPlace.com online site.  The tight integration of WebSphere Commerce and CWDirect enabled CWF to leverage their efforts in the catalog channel and seamlessly integrate product information, pricing, promotions and inventory with their online channel.

Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s e-commerce platform--based on IBM WebSphere Commerce, IBM WebSphere Application Server, IBM WebSphere Studio Application Developer, IBM WebSphere MQ and CWDirect--has succeeded in creating a reliable platform for driving increased revenue across their catalog and online channels. The Wedding Registry enables brides and grooms to register gifts from the exclusive and sought after Williamsburg brand and other uniquely crafted items.  The williamsburgmarketplace.com online commerce applications were developed and deployed with the assistance of Solutions by Design II and Trifecta Technologies, IBM WebSphere and WebSphere Commerce certified partners.
